Jerome Summers: Flight of the Nightingale
Jerome describes the title and the music on this recording: "I like the metaphor of the clarinet as a "Nightingale", as Brahms referred to the playing of his friend Richard Muhlfeld. The lyrical, yet melancholic nature of the instrument lends itself well to this reference. The music addresses the singing capabilities of the instrument, with dramatic and humourous departures."
Flight of the Nightingale offers a wonderful musical diversity. The wit and energy that is heard in the Wuensch "In Modo", the Poulenc "Sonata", and parts of the Arnold contrasts with more sombre Aranyi, Reade and Haddad works. Jerome Summers is accompanied on this recording by pianist Robert Kortgaard.
Mark Perry of the Winnipeg Sun says: "The program, Summers' agile clarinet work and Kortgaard's deft piano accompaniment make for one of the most pleasant clarinet collections heard in a long time."
