Claude Debussy (1862-1918) and Maurice Ravel's (1875-1937) string quartets
are their first attempts into the world of chamber music, and their
only compositions for string quartet. Both works are representative
of their artistry in their formative years. Many similarities can be
found in the comparison of their music as Debussy composed his quartet
in 1893 and Ravel, admiring Debussy's, was inspired to compose one himself
in 1902-3. Both were met with harsh criticism from conservative musical
circles and received mixed reactions when premiered.
Claude Debussy's Golliwog's Cakewalk is the final movement from the
Children's Corner, a suite for solo piano. The suite was written for
and dedicated to Debussy's three year old daughter Claude-Emma, a lively
and friendly child known as "Chou-Chou".
The critically acclaimed St. Petersburg Quartet, founded as the Leningrad
Quartet, has won numerous international awards and concertized across
North America, Europe, Japan and Australia. Catalog: MAR 379
