Beethoven: The Middle Sonatas
Stewart Goodyear
This recording, a follow-up to Beethoven: The Late Sonatas, features the most well known, “name” piano sonatas: The Moonlight Sonata (No. 14, Op 27 No. 2), The Pastorale Sonata (No. 15, Op 28) and The Tempest Sonata (No. 17, Op 31, No. 2).
The beginning of the 19th century marked a new phase in Beethoven’s development as an innovator. Each sonata from that period explores new and unexpected ways of approaching the sonata. The piano writing is more orchestral, expanding the role of the sonata from the living room to the concert hall. Catalog: MAR 511
