Granados, Klein and Martinu:
Chamber Music
The Gotham Trio
Nanette Levi - Violin
William Henry - Cello
Leonard Klein - Piano
Enrique
Granados - Trio Op. 50
This trio was written when Granados was in his late twenties. The first
performance was so enthusiastically received that two of the movements
had to be repeated. The work is based largely on native Spanish folk
songs.
Leonard Klein - Trio (1975)
The Trio has rhythmic patterns drawn from American speech. These are
combined with sounds that are peculiar to stringed instruments. The
piano maintains, for the most part, a contrapuntal texture. The form
is a free association of musical ideas.
Bohuslav
Martinu - Trio (Cinq pièces brèves)
Within the space of only ten days in May 1930, Martinu wrote this unusual
work. It is said that the composer himself was surprised at the ease
and fluency with which the trio took shape, commenting on it in his
usual manner. "I don't know how I came to compose the Trio; suddenly
as though it were the work of another hand, I wrote something entirely
new."
