Music for cold nights

This fall we present three new recordings for chamber music lovers:

1. Mendelssohn Piano Trios (MAR 409)
2. Mendelsson and Beethoven String Quartets (MAR 405)
3. Poulenc and Glinka Trios (MAR 403) for double reed trio. The Poulenc Trio says that Poulenc conveys "a spirit of elegance, fun and cool that we admire" and so do we.

Poulenc Plays Poulenc
The Poulenc Trio

From the lyricism of Glinka's Trio Pathétique to the jazzy elegance of André Previn, the Poulenc Trio has chosen its favourites from the double reed repetoire for this new CD, Poulenc Plays Poulenc. It includes Poulenc's Trio for Piano, Oboe and Bassoon - one of his most popular chamber works.

The Washington Post says that the trio plays with "convincing elegance, near effortless lightness and grace."

The group is becoming well known for its innovative and hugely popular Music at the Museum series, where the group links musical and historical themes to current museum exhibitions, and features the Trio in performances with guest artists, local celebrities and expert lecturers.

The members of the trio are: Vladimir Lande, oboe / Irina Kaplan Lande, piano / Bryan Young, bassoon.

Mendelssohn Piano Trios
Trio con Brio Copenhagen

“Many people consider the two Mendelssohn piano trios to be the best ever written. To celebrate the Mendelssohn bicentenary the Trio con Brio Copenhagen, one of the very best in the world, with Jens Elvekjær from Denmark at the piano, have made a superb new recording of the two works...

Mendelssohn’s music sounds as if it is playing itself, in simple phrases that follow one another, developing and commentating; it is this convincing naturalness that gives the release its great power ..." -
POLITIKEN (May 2009)

This CD is a Critic's Choice in American Record Guide.

The musicians of Trio con Brio Copenhagen are the Korean sisters Soo-Jin Hong (violin) and Soo-Kyung Hong (cello) and the Danish pianist Jens Elvekjaer. The trio was founded in 1999 in Vienna.

Have a listen: Piano in D minor, Op. 49 Molto Allegro

Mendelssohn & Beethoven
String Quartets
The Jupiter String Quartet

About this new CD the quartet writes: "We present here the final works of two master composers - Felix Mendelssohn's String Quartet Op. 80 and Ludwig van Beethoven's String Quartet Op. 135. Both are wonderful quartets, exhibiting the composers at the height of their abilities."

The Jupiter String Quartet, formed in 2001, is one of the most talented and exciting groups of young American classical musicians. The members are violinists Nelson Lee and Megan Freivogel McDonough, violist Liz Freivogel and cellist Daniel McDonough.

“[Their] intensity of spirit, which they consistently engaged throughout the evening, will perhaps be one of their signature trademarks” - New York Concert Reviews
