"David Greenberg, Baroque violinist par excellence, with years of experience in this music, and imagination to burn... superlative performance... Balletic and supple in his movements, Greenberg was all musical theatre, the colours and drama of the music wonderfully rendered, with an effortless command of his instrument." - Calgary Herald

Tunes Until Dawn

Critics love this Celtic recording:
The Green Man (formerly Folk-Tales):
"Cape Breton traditional music is a direct descendant of the music that the Scottish settlers of the island brought with them three and a half centuries ago. One can still hear that "Scottish snap" in the fiddle and organ playing; and the music has retained the certain melancholy air that Scottish music often attains...

In this CD, David Greenberg, a baroque and Cape Breton-style violinist based in Toronto, and Doug MacPhee, a Nova Scotian pianist, have teamed together to celebrate the past and present (and future) of this amazing music. Joining them are Greenberg's wife, Kate Dunlay, and famed Cape Breton player Donald MacLellan on fiddle as well as Dave MacIsaac and Curly Boy Stubbs on guitar...

Although the most obvious star of these tunes is clearly David Greenberg on the violin (by the end reel of many of these sets, "The Flagon Reel" from the first track, for example, Greenberg is sawing away with a gleeful abandon), none of these tunes would hold together without the tight rhythm rigorously yet well-humoredly laid out by Doug MacPhee's piano playing...

This is a remarkably entertaining set of a traditional music that has survived a couple of centuries with its Scottish roots still both very evident and dominant while gaining nevertheless some particularly North American stylings. The love that Greenberg, MacPhee and friends have for this music is quite infectious; given the fact that Cape Breton's traditional music seems to be finally getting the world-wide recognition it deserves, it probably won't be too long before all of us have some form of the bug."
