Early reviews:
Exclaim! Canada's Music Authority:
With a silky smooth voice that echoes
the late Eva Cassidy and a storytelling sensibility that takes cues
from Joni Mitchell, the 30-year-old Horton hits all the right notes
on her debut. The Brandon, Manitoba born cerebral singer is also a doctor,
having recently completed medical school; she is currently interning
in Winnipeg. She brings a doctors disciplined approach to her
songwriting, which is evident on her first recording a debut
disc that perfectly captures her voice and piano-playing prowess. The
ten songs are personal reflections of her journey, dealing with regrets,
reinventions and revelations. Her prairie upbringing is also an underlying
theme present throughout this rural milieu provides the musical
metaphor and inspiration behind songs such as All the Pretty Horses
and Dinosaur Park. One of the discs most revealing
songs is the love gone wrong song Winnipeg that chronicles
Hortons journey to Winnipeg following her graduation from medical
school and in the process she makes the decision to leave a lover behind.
Overall, a jazzy, gospel vibe marks this self-titled first record of
a five-album deal with Marquis and it shows that this songwriter is
in for a long career. - David McPherson
The Gazette:
Fresh off the prairies and into your living space, Jillian Hortons
self-titled album is the first of a five-record deal, so expect more
soon from this Brandon, MB-born singer-songwriter. Her melodic tunes
redefine all that is classical, with Horton adding a distinctive Canadian
vibe. - Erol Özberk

I was compelled to write. Last night as I was driving
home, I heard this song on CBC radio that sounded to me to be very fresh.
I was half-listening until the word "Winnipeg" caught my ear.
I then paid more attention to the song, purposing it to be from a Canadian
artist. I arrived at my destination and just sat there in the car listening
to this beautiful song end. I followed the lyrics and the story-line
and the beautiful use of the piano with the accompanying strings until
the very end of the song, "welcome home." Fantastic. Upon
returning home, my wife and I went to the Marquis records website to
see about this new artist, and we were both delighted to see that this
song is available as a streaming download so that others can hear for
themselves how beautiful, fresh, eloquent and playful Jillian is. Thank
you. - Mr. & Mrs. Eric M, Ottawa, Canada

I heard an interview with Jillian Horton on CBC weeks ago but foolishly
never wrote down her name. I finally figured out who it was and hastened
to buy a copy of the CD by the woman who had moved me so during the
interview.
She was funny and charming and sang terrific songs which she wrote herself.
Listening to the complete CD confirms all that I heard in the interview.
Her piano playing is tremendous. The song writing is ridiculously good.
Her voice is clear and tender and touching. Here is a talent who needs
to be discovered by anyone who appreciates good music.
Listen to this!!!

It's hard to believe that Horton is not a seasoned pro. Her first release
is remarkably mature and her piano technique is admirable. This CD grows
on me more and more with each listen.

given several others as gifts. I would highly recommend this album,

I recently heard Jillian Horton's CD on CBC's Sounds Like Canada and
was captivated. She combines a highly skillful piano technique with
a beautiful voice and thoughtful lyrics. She is a refreshing change
from the flavour of the week you usually hear on the radio these days.
I hope she'll go far. Definitely try this CD.

I received Jillian Horton's CD as a gift and fell in love after the
first song. She is an extremely talented pianist whose songs tell provocative
stories. I was lucky enough to see her perform in Winnipeg and was impressed
by the strength of her live performance. She is a true young talent
who writes and sings her own songs! Give this CD a try and you will
not be disappointed.
You have to buy this!, December 28, 2004

This is truly a beautiful piece of work that I never tire of listening
to. Its been in my CD player non-stop since I bought it. The melodies
are hauntingly beautiful and it's so original, unlike anything on the
radio right now. I hope more people get a chance to hear it. If you
love piano and strong melodies you have to get this.

Heard this CD on Sounds Like Canada and read about it in the newspaper
a few weeks ago...amazing!! Ordering more for Christmas gifts. Had it
on while friends were over for dinner and they fell in love. I wish
we could hear more of her, instead of the over-produced crap that fills
the airwaves. Intelligent, mature, beautiful music that has stayed with
me since the moment I first heard it.

I caught "All the Pretty Horses" on a CBC2 broadcast and was
immediately mesmerized by Jillian Horton. Her voice, her piano playing,
her songwriting are amazing for an artist releasing her first CD. Simply
put, I can't get enough of this CD. I ordered it directly from Marquis
a couple of weeks back and it has been on constant play at home, on
my mp3, etc. "Less of Me", "Winnipeg" and "All
the Pretty Horses" are highlights but all of the songs are strong
and well-performed. I couldn't recommend this more highly
