This CD of music for cello and piano presents three World Premiere recordings: two by contemporary Canadian composers, one by an American. The final work is by early 19th century composer Hélène Riese Liebmann.

This is an evocative and melodic collection. Glick’s Chagall Suite was inspired by Marc Chagall.

Gellman’s Sonata for Cello and Piano presents melodic themes and an Adagio Espressivo that is a slow uninterrupted song.

Hélène Riese Liebmann’s Grand Sonata for Cello and Piano in B flat major, Op. 11 includes a wonderful set of variations based on Mozart’s theme, “La ci darem la mano” from Don Giovanni.

Maurice Gardner was a prolific composer for film, stage and television, who late in his career, devoted his energy to composing concert music.

The performers are Joan Harrison, cello and Elaine Keillor, piano.

Joan Harrison is a chamber musician performing on both modern and baroque cello. She has appeared as principal cellist with the New York City Opera, Aradia Ensemble, New York Grande Band and Toronto Chamber Orchestra.

Elaine Keillor has performed piano recitals and with orchestra in Europe and North America. Holding a doctorate in musicology, she is a Distinguished Research Professor Emerita of Carleton University, Ottawa.
