June 16, 2003 - Jens Lindemann is back home after triumphant appearances at this year's International Trumpet Guild Conference, held in Fort Worth Texas. A reviewer noted: "With flair and obvious and infectious joy, the former member of the Canadian Brass showed consummate control in technique, tone, and style."


June 15, 2003 - Catherine Manoukian leaves today for concert appearances in Japan. She will perform the Khatchaturian violin concerto with the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra and the Osaka Philharmonic Orchestra.


June 11, 2003 - Marquis president Earl Rosen was today elected president of SOCAN for a three-year term. The Society of Composers, Authors and Music Composers of Canada is the Canadian copyright collective for the public performance of musical works. It administers the performing rights of members (composers, lyricists, songwriters and their publishers) and those of affiliated international societies by licensing the use of their music in Canada.

June 1, 2003 - Molly Johnson is in England, performing in London's Soho district at the internationally acclaimed Pizza Express Jazz Club - voted "Best Live Music Venue" in the UK by Time Out magazine. Tonight she thrilled her fans and made many new friends, when she performed with band members Andrew Craig and Mike Downes. There's a second concert tomorrow night.

May 12th, 2003 - Toronto - Alfie Zappacosta, one of Canada's great singers and songwriters, has signed a multi-record agreement with Marquis. Described by many as a "national treasure", Alfie's songs and singing have been fan favorites for almost twenty years. Songs like Passion, We Should Be Lovers and Nothing Can Stand in Your Way continue to delight fans. Present at the signing was Deane Cameron, President of EMI — distributor of Marquis in Canada — who originally signed Alfie to EMI. Deane Cameron said "Alfie has always been one of my favorite artists. We are pleased to be working with him again, through Marquis. I feel the time is right for Alfie to have major international success."

April 22, 2003 - Trumpet player Stuart Laughton has for the past week been recording his first CD for Marquis. The music includes Benjamin Britten's "Fanfare for St. Edmundsbury" and Alan Hovahness's "Prayer for St. Gregory", as well as several pieces by Peter Tiefenbach, who is also the pianist on the CD. The new CD - no title yet! - was recorded at Humbercrest Church in Toronto (see photos from the recording sessions) and will be in stores early this fall.

Stuart Laughton was a founding member of the Canadian Brass before attending Philadelphia's Curtis Institute of Music. Upon graduation he was invited by Rudolf Serkin to The Marlboro Festival, Vermont, and was appointed solo trumpet of La Scala, Milan, by Claudio Abbado. He has appeared with varied orchestras such as the Toronto Symphony.

April 16, 2003 - Jean Ashworth Bartle, C.M., O.Ont., Founder and Music Director of the Toronto Children's Chorus, has written a new book: Sound Advice: Becoming a Better Children's Choir Conductor, published by Oxford University Press, which is now available in stores and on the internet through Amazon and other sites. The book is an invaluable resource. A heartfelt musical philosophy is clearly expressed and enhanced by useful examples and wonderful anecdotes. The book also provides a unique and intimate behind-the-scenes look at the Toronto Children's Chorus experience from the point of view of all involved, from the author to the choir members and their parents.


April 11, 2003 - Trio Norté (Lenny Solomon - violin, Sasha Luminsky - accordion, and Bill Bridges - guitar) today filmed a video of "Fernanda", a popular, toe-tapping track from their first CD, Trio Norté. The video was shot at the old Berkeley Church in Toronto. Watch for the video soon, across Canada on Bravo! Photos from the shoot.



April 7, 2003 - Molly Johnson was a leading light during the Juno Awards this past weekend in Ottawa. Not only did she co-host the pre-Juno awards Saturday Night show with Spek, where she did a fantastic job, she and Andrew Craig performed "Ooh Child / Redemption Song" and floored everyone with a beautiful performance. On Sunday, Molly took the presenting spotlight with hometown Ottawa Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson to present the Juno for "International Album of the Year" and then joined new Hall-of-Famer Tom Cochrane for "Life Is A Highway" during Tom's closing medley number. A great time was had by all who saw her.


March 10, 2003 - Patricia O'Callaghan is busy filming a one-hour television special called "Youkali Hotel" which will feature Patricia performing about ten songs, and which will be aired across Canada on CBC in February 2004. Special guests are Hawksley Workman, Mary Margaret O'Hara, Albert Schultz, and Kurt Swinghammer. The film has a loose narrative based on a small town waitress who's breaking up with her boyfriend and has an active fantasy life. It's being filmed at an abandoned Grand Hotel in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. It's about -50° C (-58° F) in Saskatchewan these days, so good luck and stay warm to all the cast and crew!




February 18, 2003 - On March 17 Molly Johnson's second solo CD, Another Day, will be released in a host of international markets including: the United Kingdom, Germany, Belgium, Holland, Denmark, Finland, Greece, Poland, Portugal, Hong Kong, Spain, Turkey, Ukraine, Russia, and Slovenia on Capitol Records (EMI) as well as Japan on JVC Victor. In addition to these markets, Johnson's Another Day will be released in the United States by Narada Jazz (EMI) and in France by Universal Music France, by the end of May 2003.

February 12, 2003 - Congratulations to Molly Johnson, whose CD Another Day has been nominated for a Canadian Juno Award as Best Vocal Jazz Album of the Year. The 2003 awards will be broadcast, and the winners announced, in Ottawa on Sunday, April 6.



January 16, 2003 - A special thank you to Molly Johnson's many fans. Both her CDs, Molly Johnson and Another Day were on the list of 50 Jazz Top Sellers in Canada in 2002.

January 14, 2003 - Congratulations to Ricardo Morris of Alabama who has won 24 free CDs. He entered the raffle at the Marquis booth at the International Association of Jazz Educators conference which was held in Toronto last week. Hundreds of jazz fans visited the booth to buy CDs and talk about Molly Johnson, who performed at RD's on Saturday night before a sold-out crowd.


January 6, 2003 - The Nathaniel Dett Chorale are the subject of a new hour-long documentary called "Carry Me Home: The Story and Music of the Nathaniel Dett Chorale". It will be premiered across Canada on VisionTV on Monday, February 3 at 8:00 pm. There will be several encore presentations - see the VisionTV web site for details.
